Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is a suburban Worcester County town with a population of more than 35,600 within its 21.6 square miles. The town, which was settled in 1722, is named after a community in England. Shrewsbury is bordered by Worcester, Boylston, West Boylston, Grafton, Northborough, and Westborough. It is located in central Massachusetts, about an hour away from Boston. Shrewsbury is broken down into sections or “districts.” It has been home to many notable residents, including the last survivor of the Titanic, a Revolutionary War general, a co-inventor of contraceptive pills, and many famous politicians and artists. Public schools in Shrewsbury include the Oak Middle School and Shrewsbury High School. Shrewsbury has an excellent and ever-expanding public library, which was established in 1872. The town has a representative town meeting type of government with a town manager and a board of selectmen.

In 1976, during Shays’ Rebellion, Shrewsbury was an encampment sight for hundreds of those who marched on the Worcester Court House in an attempt to prevent debt collections. Today, the Westborough District Court hears cases from Shrewsbury as well as Grafton, Northborough, Southborough and Westborough. More serious cases are heard in the Worcester Superior Court, which is located on Main Street in nearby Worcester. There is also a federal district court on Main Street in Worcester. Stephen Neyman, a prominent Massachusetts criminal defense lawyer, frequently appears in all of these courts, and courts all over the Commonwealth, on behalf of his clients.
