Saugus

Saugus, an Indian name, was originally a large land grant containing the modern cities of Lynn, Swampscott, Saugus, Lynnfield, Nahant, Reading and Wakefield. The territory was renamed Lynn eight yeas after founding, after King’s Lynn in England, but the city of Saugus retains its original name. U.S. 1 runs through the town, which helped revitalize its economy in the 1930s, after the automobile was popularized. Today, Saugus is a working-class to middle-class town known for its heavy influx of Italian and Irish Americans from Revere, Somerville, East Boston and South Boston.
