Middlesex County Sex Crimes

Middlesex County stretches from the MetroWest suburbs of Boston north to Lowell, near the New Hampshire border. It has the largest population of any county in Massachusetts and indeed, in New England. Its population is relatively affluent, and many commute to jobs in Boston. While people of many backgrounds live in the county, U.S. Census results show a plurality of residents who cite Irish ancestry. Though the government of the county has been abolished, its county seats were Cambridge and Lowell, and many county functions still remain in those cities. The county’s two Superior Courts are in Lowell and Woburn, where they hear cases of felonies carrying more than five years in prison, such as date rape and indecent assault and battery of a child. There are also 12 district courts throughout the county that hear less serious cases.

People Accused of Sex Crimes Need Help Fast

If you’re accused of a sex crime in Massachusetts, you should never, ever plead guilty before speaking to an experienced attorney. The days of scarlet letters and official morality may be over, but sex crimes still carry long prison sentences as well as civil penalties and damaging personal and social consequences. Even a crime that causes no direct harm to the victim, like possession of child pornography, can lead to lifelong registration as a sex offender in Massachusetts, with further penalties for failing to register exactly in the way required by law. And defendants are likely to be judged in the “court of public opinion” when accusations become public, long before a true court can consider the evidence.

At the Law Offices of Stephen Neyman, we believe that everyone should be presumed innocent until proven guilty, even if they are accused of a very serious crime. When we take on cases of serious sex crimes that are likely to make the defendant unpopular in the wider community, we prefer to take them as early as possible — preferably before an arrest is even made. With an early start, we can help clients avoid or minimize negative publicity. For example, we can help you voluntarily turn yourself in so that you’re not subjected to an unpleasant scene at an arrest. When you are initially questioned by police, we can sit right there next to you, protecting you from questions and interrogation tactics that go beyond reasonable. An early start gives us access to the most chances to negotiate with prosecutors for dropped charges or reduced charges. And for cases that end up in trial, an early start helps us put together a thorough defense.
