Braintree Sex Crimes

The South Shore city of Braintree is a middle-class suburb within easy commuting distance of Boston. Like many Massachusetts municipalities, it was founded in the 1600s and named for a city of the same name in Britain. However, Braintree became a city only in 2008. Many institutions in the city are named for Colonel Sylvanus Thayer, who became an early leader of the West Point military academy and a founder of engineering schools there and at Dartmouth. Braintree was also the retirement home of Thomas Watson, assistant to Alexander Graham Bell, who founded a shipyard in Braintree that became a major local economic engine. Braintree residents accused of misdemeanor and minor felony crimes such as statutory rape will go to the Quincy District Court in neighboring Quincy for trial. Those accused of serious felonies like rape and indecent assault and battery on a child will be tried at the Dedham Superior Court.

Strong Defense Against Serious Sex Charges

No criminal charge is fun, but sex-related criminal charges can turn your life upside down. More than other crimes, sex crimes carry substantial civil and personal penalties as well as heavy prison sentences. In particular, penalties for sex crimes against children may be inflated because of the strong feelings members of the public typically have about them. For example, possession of child pornography is punishable by up to 2 1/2 years in jail or up to five years in prison, even though it does not require any in-person contact with or violence against a child. Distribution of child pornography has a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. After release from prison, people convicted of these crimes must register with the state as sex offenders, which means further restrictions on their freedom for 20 years to life. And because of the nature of the charges, they can also expect to lose friends and have trouble finding employment.

If you’re facing consequences that severe, you should call the Law Offices of Stephen Neyman for help. Our lead attorney, Stephen Neyman, has practiced criminal defense law for more than 20 years in Massachusetts. We have helped many people facing serious sex charges win not guilty verdicts in court, come to a fair plea agreement or negotiate for reduced or dismissed charges before the charges can go to trial. Having an experienced attorney by your side can make the difference in whether you receive a fair trial, which is very important when you’re charged with a serious sex crime. We question jurors closely about their ability to fairly consider the client’s innocence or guilt, and advocate for only those who believe prejudice and emotion won’t cloud their judgment. Paradoxically, this sometimes leads to a more impartial jury than someone accused of murder or another non-sex felony might receive.
