Lowell Sex Crimes

Thirty miles north of Boston, the city of Lowell is a city in its own right and the fourth largest city in Massachusetts. It is nationally famous as a center for the early Industrial Revolution, when textile mills harnessed the Merrimack and Concord Rivers. The resulting jobs attracted daughters of Massachusetts farm families as well as immigrants, creating a metropolitan area that today includes many of the surrounding communities. Modern Lowell retains that strong immigrant community, with healthy populations of Cambodians and Hispanics. As the major city for northern Middlesex County, Lowell has its own Superior Court, where people from throughout the region have cases of serious felonies heard. These include charges of indecent assault and battery on a child and rape. The Lowell District Court, which serves six other municipalities in the area, hears minor felonies and misdemeanors such as sexual assault.

Strong Defense for Clients Accused of Sex Crimes

Sex-related criminal charges are serious business in Massachusetts. Many of them carry a sentence of “life or any term of years” in prison, which can lead to very long sentences in some circumstances. They also come with steep fines and, where appropriate, requirements to pay financial restitution. For many violent sex crimes or sex crimes involving children, the defendant also faces a possible obligation to register as a sex offender after release from prison, a civil penalty that can last 20 years to life. And then there are the personal and social consequences. In many cases, an accusation alone can destroy reputations and ruin friendships. Even before a court is able to consider the evidence, sex charges can strain marriages and cause discipline or suspensions at work. And a conviction for a sex crime can mean loss of a professional license or a job, effectively ending careers.

Fortunately, there are many ways to defend sex crimes, even very serious ones. The majority of sex crimes take place in private, where only the defendant and the accuser are witnesses to what really happened. That gives the police and the jury no choice but to decide whose story they think is more believable. At the Law Offices of Stephen Neyman, we work hard to ensure that our clients have the credibility they need when they go before a jury. Because some officers react to sex crimes with prejudice, or use gender stereotypes to judge the situation, the basic evidence is sometimes enough to poke holes in the accuser’s story. We will also look for ulterior motives from the accuser, to show that he or she may have good reason to stretch the truth. And when appropriate, we can use scientific or psychological experts to explain the evidence to the jury.
