  • North Andover

Lawrence District Court is one of the most efficiently run district courts in Massachusetts. The clerk's office and probation department are extremely accommodating and friendly. May of the court personnel speak Spanish thereby facilitating communication and access for the large Hispanic community. The Essex County District Attorney maintains an office in the courthouse as well. There are typically eight to ten assistant district attorneys assigned to this court. There is also a staff of victim witness advocates assigned to the Lawrence District Court.

There is a tremendous range of criminal activity that is prosecuted in the Lawrence Court. Many of the more serious felonies are initially charged in this court where they are tracked until the district attorney's office obtains an indictment to the superior court. Murder, robbery, rape, home invasion, drug trafficking, carjacking and kidnapping cases often commence in the Lawrence District Court where the defendant will be arraigned and bail will be set. Sometimes these charges will be "broken down" to a lesser included offense over which the district court has jurisdiction.
